# Research synthesis — PROHARDVER! forum + selfh.st survey (2026-10-13)
Sources: `felhom.eu/documentation/audits/forum-research-2026-10-12/` (2,908 posts, 195 people, 82 beginner threads, 2023-10 → 2026-10) and `felhom.eu/documentation/audits/selfhst-survey-2026-10-12/` (1,869 / 3,655 / 4,081 respondents, 2023–2025). Register rows: R-989, R-990, R-991. Claims below re-checked against live source on 2026-10-13 (07 §6.1, 01 §7, gyik.html, OPEN-ITEMS).

## Who these people are
Both sources are hobby users. Neither is our buyer. The forum's 54 beginners are the closest match. Hungary gave 19 answers to the 2024 survey. Neither source proves that households will pay; only 1 forum writer in 3 years said he would pay someone to set it up, and no paid managed service was named.
## Conclusions
1. **The catalog is not the problem.** We ship 8 of the survey's top 10 apps, and every app that 3+ forum people wanted, except DLNA (7), an ad blocker (5, plus 14 experts run one), a camera recorder (5), and Syncthing (25.9 % in the survey).
2. **The hardware message is the biggest gap. Both studies found it on their own.** No page says which machines work. 8 of the 33 beginners who named their hardware own only a Synology, a Raspberry Pi or a router disk. The installer cannot run on them (x86-64 only).
3. **The beginners' biggest question is "which system do I install?" (20 of 82 threads).** Felhom removes that choice. Our website does not say so.
4. **Their fears are our features, but the website does not show it.**
- Data loss: only 25.2 % keep an off-site copy, and 13.3 % have no backup at all. Felhom makes three nightly tiers, and one of them is encrypted and off-site.
- "An update broke it": only 14.6 % update automatically. Felhom updates and monitors the apps for the customer.
- Remote access confusion: Felhom needs no open port and no VPN app.
- "Too complex", "costs my time": this is the service itself.
5. **The power bill (60 people) and noise (43) are the top pains.** Our FAQ says 15–35 W, but we have not published a measurement.
6. **Synology is the only rival people name (43 people).** Its 2025 disk lock created a fear of lock-in (15 people). A paid service is also a vendor. Buyers will ask: "What do I keep if I stop paying?" The answer is a promise to users, so it needs the operator's ruling.
7. **There is a tension with the pitch.** Privacy is the #2 reason (86.3 %, and it is rising), and data sovereignty is our pitch. But Cloudflare can read the traffic (R-904, deferred). The Hungarian experts recommend Tailscale or WireGuard. A well-informed buyer will see this.
8. **Trends:** more people build their own machines (20 % → 50 % on the forum). Jellyfin goes up and Plex goes down. Home Assistant is very large (62.7 %). Immich goes up. The beginners' questions did not change in 3 years.

## Merged recommendations (from the 20 in the two FELHOM.md files)
| # | Action | Source | Who decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | One "which machine works" page: x86-64 only, a RAM and disk floor measured on a demo box, and a clear statement that a Synology, a Raspberry Pi or a router disk will not work | both (R-991) | operator sets the floor |
| 2 | Website copy: "you do not choose the system, we do"; off-site backup with the 1-in-4 figure; automatic updates; one line on remote access (no port, no VPN) | both | CC, then operator review |
| 3 | Measure the power draw (W) and the noise of the recommended box, then publish the numbers | forum | CC |
| 4 | A "Felhom or Synology?" FAQ answer, plus "what you keep if you leave" | forum | operator (promise to users) |
| 5 | "Bring your old office PC" as the cheap entry, with a machine check | forum | operator (money) |
| 6 | Catalog: DLNA server and Syncthing first; ad blocker and camera recorder only after a design decision | both | later, through the new-app checklist |
| 7 | Use the privacy figures when R-904 is ranked | survey | operator |
| 8 | FAQ: what our Home Assistant cannot do compared with Home Assistant OS | survey | CC |
| — | Not now: Forgejo, Joplin, single sign-on, cloud VPS | survey | — |
